The client for this house remodelling is a retired professor with a large collection of books and manuscripts. The brief called for a new office with ample display and storage space for his collection, remodelling of the kitchen and dining space, and to improve the environmental performance of the house.
The proposal suggested rebuilding the existing kitchen and garage to simplify the site levels and create a link with a courtyard garden. A service spine along the street elevation contains a WC and pantry, while an open plan kitchen diner opens out to the garden through folding doors. A new office at first floor is accessed via a bookcase lined link, through a secret door and into a top lit, reclusive workspace.
