Artistic Atmospheres
Vertical Studio 2011

The question this studio aimed to examine was how can architects imagine, define, design and make atmospheres that makes people feel particular moods. Underlying this idea is an interest in atmosphere as a way of understanding experiences, places and spaces. The studio aims to generate studies and ways of working that can be introduced into studio design projects in the future.

Each student was given a famous painting of an interior space. The first phase of the project was to examine the room in the artwork in detail and to attempt to understand how the atmosphere has been created. Students interrogated their painting and attempted to draw plans and room elevations of the space.

Students then had to make a physical model of the artwork and explore how the character of the space was created, using light, texture, material, colour and depth.
