The development of the building envelope using Welsh-grown timber: a study through prototyping

Steve has recently completed a PhD by design focused within the Welsh timber industry and sustainable, contemporary architecture. It explored the hypothesis that despite a perceived inability to use Welsh-grown timber species in architecture, that in fact they can be used for a range of construction uses in the building envelope specific to the properties of the selected species using the skills and machinery currently available in Wales.

The aim of the PhD was to demonstrate strategies for the use of Welsh-grown timber in the design and construction of context-specific contemporary architecture using the established skills and technology available within Wales. A number of live design projects have been conducted as prototypes to physically explore design and making with Welsh timber.
