Mat has been selected as creative practitioner for two mini-residencies as part of the Wales Rural Futures programme. Mat will be working in the village of Grosmont in Monmouthshire and in Llangollen, North Wales, over the summer months.

Mat led one of several groups of artists, architects, urban designers and local people at the Merthyr Industrial Heritage Charrette back in the autumn. Our group explored cultural activity in the town; the final report and film have just been published and include a cameo appearance in the film! Find out more here

As part of our project to revisit the town plan we developed for Ruthin Town Council in 2012, we've put on an exhibition and summit at Ruthin Craft Centre as part of Ruthin Future week. This week of activites and events aims to build evidence to inform the development of the town plan over then next five years. Find out more here

Steve has been selected by the British Council and the AHRC as part of a team of eight UK makers & researchers to take part in Living Research 2018. Based in China, covering Xi’an and Chengdu, the programme will investigate the local ecosystem of creative practitioners, academics, industrial design houses, makerspaces and technology hubs, and determine how the UK maker culture could meaningfully engage with them. We're delighted to be back working with Ruthin Town Council, five years on from completing Ruthin: Market Town of the Future. We'll be revisiting the work we carried out and evaluating it in light of the changing policy landscape and projects delivered, before exploring the potential of vacant buildings in the town.

We've received planning consent to repurpose part of the Ardagh sports pavilion to create a new, fully accessible cafe and semi-permanent hub space. The project, a collaboration with DesignFarm and Hands On Bristol, will be self built by the community in 2018. Find out more

We're presenting papers at the Passive and Low Energy Architecture Conference 2017 in Edinburgh this week. Mat is presenting papers on the role of Place Planning in creating community wellbeing, and the university as an agent of change in the city through live community architecture projects. Steve is presenting his design research on additive architecture using Welsh timber.

Following the success of our Shape My Brecon Beacons toolkit for community-led planning in the national park, we've been commissioned by Conwy CBC to create a place planning tool for their county. We're also hoping to test it through a pilot project in Llandudno.

'Getting Things Done: Evolution of the Built Environment in the Voralberg' opens in the Senedd, Cardiff Bay. Steve organised for the exhibition to be brought to Wales afer seeing it in Austria. The exhibition, supported by the WSA, DCFW, Austrian Cultural Commission and the National Asembly for Wales, was formally opened by the Austrian ambassador. Find out more here

As part of our involvement with Hands On Bristol we're excited to be working on a 'pocket park' in Bristol. The team of Dr Rachel Sara (UWE), Matthew (UWE & Coombs Jones) and George Grace (Town Squared) have secured funding to develop proposals for a neglected public space space in Southmead.

We're opening an 'Ideas Shop' in Stroud with our UWE architecture & planning/architecture & environmental engineering Studio 2 students. We are taking over an empty shop on the high street as a space to exchange ideas about 'Future Housing' as part of our student's co-housing proposals in the town. The 'ideas shop' is open for speed planning, studio sessions and reviews for the 4th & 5th and 11th & 12th March. Thanks to Stroud Valley Artspace for the opportunity! Find out more here

Over the next few weeks we are carrying out two pilot studies for Shape My Town. Following a call for applications by DCFW and ourselves we have selected Abergavenny and Ynysybwl to take part in the pilots. We will be using these to test aspects of Shape My Town and refine the process.

Matthew is presenting a paper at 'Reimagining Rurality', a conference at the University of Westminster on 27-28th February. Entitled 'Re-imagining Rural Towns: A Design-led Approach', the paper discusses methods of mapping and understanding rural towns that become tools for the designer, before presenting two projects designed within historic rural town cores.

Our Resilient Hay Vertical Studio with students at the Welsh School of Architecture will be exhibited at Jacob’s Market, Cardiff as part of the Vertical Studio finale. Our students explored different futures for Hay-on-Wye over the next 20 years if it focussed on self-sufficiency in energy, food or expanded on its 'book town' reputation.
